Face
The human body is an essential element in Yael Davids works. Combined
with objects of our daily life such as chairs, tables or beds, she
always subjects the body to extreme conditions and situations. In Face
we see only the head of a woman whose hair seems to turn very slowly by
itself around her shaved head in an endless loop. The absurdity of
rotating hair lets the personality of the woman become less important.
Her face is motionless, almost stoic. The head acts as an object
carrier, its individuality is suppressed in favor of the effect, not
revealing the necessary effort. The body isn't active, it is activated.
Yael David negates existing relations by not making a difference between
a body and an object. The individuality of the human body is called in
question and ritualized. Instead of the face, it is the hair that
appears to be alive and active.
