Separation
In a water-filled aquarium lies a human head lies on its side. The face,
that seems to be alive, is tense, the eyes are turned towards the
viewer. Through a projector that is mounted above the aquarium the
'head' (reduced to an egg-like shape) comes to life: It is the artist
who holds his breath in this absurd scenario. The wall behind the
aquarium shows the projection of a naked man (again it is the artist)
helplessly flailing his arms about to save himself from drowning. This
absurd situation is both terrifying and fascinating. The sculptural
ensemble by Tony Oursler immediately intrudes upon the viewers
situation. He cannot keep his distance as a purely receptive passer-by
anymore - he inevitably becomes a part of the installation as soon as he
enters the room. The viewer finds himself confronted with the automatism
of medial virtuality that Oursel demonstrates in a provocative way.
