I Should Be Older than All of You
Maria Marshalls large video projection shows a birds-eye view of a
labyrinth-like construction, in the center of which a young boy is lying
on his back. Dressed only in a loincloth he is looking
towards the viewer. This peaceful, very aesthetical atmosphere ends very
abruptly as soon as the viewer discovers a couple of snakes near the
edge that are trying to get to the boy. Immediately, the image of a
carefree childs world is turning into that of deadly threat. Through
the real boy in the real situation the viewer can't escape becoming
witness to a dangerous situation in which he is powerless. With his film
techniques and special effects Marshall place the viewer in an extremely
tense atmosphere between uneasiness and fascination. As an artist,
Marshall evokes in the viewers mind the worst fears and nightmares
with this psychological experiment. It is even worse for a mother since it
is the son of the artist who is imprisoned in the snake pit.
