Bettina Pousttchis installation confronts the viewer with a
contradictory atmosphere. A monitor displays a continous loop that shows
parts of an audience during an event. In the stands we see cheering
crowd starting the 'la ola' over and over again. The pictures show
jostling, screaming and hysteria - but everything is without sound. The
accoustic part occurs only in the imagination of the viewer, who gets
carried away in spite of the absolute silence. The artists attention is not focussed
on the celebrated star but on the cheering crowd of
fans. Untited by their common enthusiasm it is they who become the stars
in this work. In the mass, the personal identity is replaced by
identification with the others, a fact that is also stressed by the
uniform fan clothing. The group portraits on the walls support this
idea. The stage-like props reverse the perspective between being on
stage and being back-stage, between private and public sphere.
