The installation by Anri Sala recalls of a movie theatre: a pitch-black, carpeted room with special accoustic properties and a shining screen in front. The seemingly cozy atmosphere, however, sharply contrasts with the presented movie. We see a very slow camera pan through the zoo of Tirana. From the visitors perspective we see abandoned compounds and cages in a negelected and desolate condition. The splendor of past days has turned into tristesse and emptiness. The original idea of a zoo as a representative institution serving amusement as well as educational and scientifical purposes is totally reversed. Anri Salas Arena becomes a documentary display of former imprisonment and opression. His installation reaches a symbolical and methaphorical quality that describes his role as an artist and Albanian within the social discussion. Sala focuses on his geographical and cultural origins in its sharp contrast to the present situation. The zoo becomes a mirror of the political and social reality in Albania.
