Melankoli
The video image shows the opening and closing thighs of a woman - very
slowly and over and over again. Nearly endlessly. Like a photographic
diaphragm they either obscure or enable the view of the sea in the
distance. On the horizon, a coastal landscape appears in front of the
setting sun. Only the murmuring sound of the sea is audible. The
monotony and slowness of the movement creates an intimate and
undisturbed atmosphere of subtile eroticism that puts the viewer in the
position of a voyeur. The thighs, however, are not only a methaphor for
lust and exhibitionism but also refusal and distance. The
intimacy of apparent closeness only lasts a short moment. The work
requires time so that the alternation between light and colours, silence
and sound, emotional closeness and cool distance can unfold. Only then
can the video convey the sensual and aesthetical experience that no
other media can express.
